Description

Join us at La Scuola di Eataly Toronto for an in-person class to discover how to make a crispy and gooey-centred Pizza Fritta!

Italians say “Tutto é buono fritto, anche l’aria,” meaning “Everything is good fried, even the air,” and we agree! Pizza fritta, a cousin of Neapolitan pizza, emerged as a result of poverty experienced in Italy during World War Two. People had to get creative to find replacements for missing ingredients. The city of Napoli found itself in crisis, and the materials needed for pizza —mozzarella and even wood for the ovens—became a luxury. Fried pizza, a less-expensive alternative nicknamed “pizza of the people,” was filled with less expensive ingredients like pork crackling and ricotta.

The pizze fritte were also sold and prepared in the alleys and in private homes to supplement the family’s income. The fried pizza is also remembered by the famous film by Vittorio De Sica, The Gold of Naples, where Sophia Loren, shows her skill of flouring and stretching dough and placing the discs in hot oil.

Pizza fritta comes in a variety of different shapes; round ones  are called ‘montanare’ and half moons are called ‘calzone.’ Whichever shape you prefer, there is no denying how tasty and filling Pizza Fritta can be.

During this dinner and workshop experience our chef will teach you all the secrets to prepare your very own pizza fritta from scratch. You will be shown how to knead dough, create your pizza base and add your toppings. But first, enjoy a delicious appetizer paired with a welcome drink. Then top off your night tasting your very own pizza fritta creation accompanied by the perfect wine pairing.

Our pizzaioli are passionate about making authentic pizza and will transport your taste buds to the city of Naples, the birthplace of pizza.

In this class guests will:

•            Learn about pizza fritta and how to make it at home

•            Enjoy a welcome appetizer and taste their pizza fritta creation

•            Sip on wine and learn how to find the perfect pairing

•            Take home the menu and adapted recipes
